The battery is one of the most essential parts of a smartphone. It provides the power needed by every little phone piece to operate efficiently. It is necessary to take care of the phone's battery to ensure that your smartphone runs efficiently and prolongs the battery's life. Batteries naturally deplete over time. However, there are some steps that you can take to slow down the depletion and extend the battery's life.
1. Close out of applications:
Ensure that any apps you have been in have been completely closed out. Exiting the app does not close it. It will still run in the background. While running in the background, these apps take up battery power to refresh and stay where you left off in the app. Phones are designed this way so you can easily hop back into an app. Closing the apps ultimately reduces the workload on the phone and consequently, the battery. Fortunately, closing out these apps is very easy.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen like you are exiting an app.
- After swiping up, don’t let go. Instead, hold the swipe for a second.
- After this action, a bunch of pages will appear side by side. These are all the apps that are still open in the background.
- Swiping up on each of these pages will close them out completely.
- On your Samsung, tap the three horizontal lines button on the bottom of the phone screen.
- After hitting this button, a bunch of pages will appear. These are all the apps that are still open in the background.
- Swiping up on each will close them out completely.
2. Limit using the phone when charging:
While charging the phone, it is best to avoid doing larger tasks. These include streaming, social media, etc. These tasks use up more battery power than other tasks. Using up this power while trying to charge puts wear on the battery, which makes it deplete quickly. Smaller tasks like checking texts are fine. However, the less you do on the phone while charging, the better.
3. Use the power save mode:
Running a phone's battery entirely out is also hard on the battery, leading to it depleting quickly. One way to avoid this is using the phone's power save mode. When turned on, among other things, the phone will shut off functions that are not necessary. It will also dim the display to reduce how much battery power is being used, thus extending how much battery is left and avoiding a completely dead battery.
4. Turn off the Always On Display:
Most new smartphones have an Always On Display. The Always On Display is where the phone will still show things on the lock screen when the phone is not in use. When the display is always on, it constantly draws power from the battery to keep the screen on. Turning off this feature reduces the workload on the battery. Turning off this feature is simple:
- Go to your phone’s settings.
- Select “Display and brightness.”
- Scroll down to “Always on Display” and select it.
- On the new page is a toggle that you can switch to “Off.”
- On your Samsung, tap the three horizontal lines button on the bottom of the phone screen.
- After hitting this button, a bunch of pages will appear. These are all the apps that are still open in the background.
- Swiping up on each will close them out completely.
5. Delete battery-draining apps:
Some apps, like Facebook, use up more battery power than others. Removing these apps and instead accessing them through the internet browser you have on the phone reduces how much battery power is used. You can also find what apps use up the most battery power on your smartphone:
6. Turn off voice assistant:
The voice assistant can also deplete the battery. Most voice assistants are set to listen for your command to use them. They are always on and using power, waiting to hear you give the command. This power can be saved by changing the voice assistant settings to stop actively listening for a command. See below for how to change the voice assistant settings.
- Open your phone settings.
- Scroll down and select “Siri and Search.”
- On the new page, find and select “Listen for.”
- Select this option, and you will see options for what Siri will listen for.
- Select the option that says “Off.”
- Siri will no longer listen but can still be activated by Holding the power button.
- Open your phone’s settings.
- Scroll down to “Apps” and select it.
- On the new page, find and select “Bixby voice.”
- On the new page, find and select “Bixby voice settings.”
- Select “Voice wake up” on the new page.
- Use the Toggle to turn on or off “Voice wake up.”
Batteries have an optimal range that, if kept within, prolongs the battery's life. There is a misconception that running the battery all the way out before recharging is best. This is not true. Having your phone full or empty wears the phone's battery down and shortens the lifespan of the phone. The best range for your phone battery is twenty to eighty percent. Due to how the batteries work in phones, they are put under strain when full or empty. Keeping the phone between twenty and eighty percent puts less wear and stress on the battery, allowing it to last longer. While it might not be ideal to have only sixty percent of your phone available, avoiding a completely dead battery or full battery will help prolong the life of your battery.
